Why you enjoy Horizons: I love horizons because it reminds me why I want to be a pre med by showing me who I used to be and who I want to become. Im always surrounded by positive influences and have a huge pool of role models to turn to for advice.

Anitra Karthic

Vice President

Major: Neuroscience and Sociology

Research you are involved in: Multiple Sclerosis Research at Cleveland Clinic

Extracurriculars: Associate Director of Partnerships at Peerlift, Volunteer at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Alpha Phi

During my free time: You can always find me capturing Cleveland’s food scene and the people behind them through my social media platform @FoodCWRU or reading an interesting book you probably won’t find on the New York Times Bestseller’s list!

Why you enjoy Horizons: I love Horizons because of the close relationships we form. As an undergrad, I have the unique opportunity to experience the best of both worlds. I can be a mentee learning how to navigate med school and leading case study discussions while also supporting my high schoolers’ goals and challenging them to think beyond the possible as a mentor. Horizons welcomed me with open arms and it has empowered me to become a positive influence in others’ lives.

Josef Scheidt

Public Relations Director

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Minors: Chemistry; Polymer Science

Year at Case: Sophomore

Research you are involved in: Lu Lab: Nanoparticles as vehicles for gene therapy and drug delivery; Case Transgenic and Targeting Facility: Breeding and genotyping mouse models for in vivo cancer studies 

Extracurriculars: I volunteer in the University Hospital ED, write articles for publication in semiotics and cultural ecology journals, and am working to develop an invention for a biomedical device into a business. I also coach and judge for the Veale Venture Challenge.

Why you enjoy Horizons: Horizons is unique in that it embraces intellectual diversity while also providing a loving community through a common objective. It is a great place to learn, relax, and remember that medicine is fun!

Zain Khawaja

Research you are involved in: Cancer Research at Case Western School of Medicine

Extracurriculars: Analyst at The Weatherhead Fund, Emergency Department Volunteer at University Hospitals, Vice President Public Relations at Pakistani Students Association, Phi Delta Epsilon - Premedical Fraternity

During my free time: I am always reading all the news I possibly can. I constantly check the stock market, and have been doing my best to learn more about investing so that I can improve the strategies I use. You can talk to me about literally anything, I love socializing with others, and constantly learning.

Why you enjoy Horizons: I love Horizons because I can share my passion of medicine with people who I have the opportunity to become close with. After my first year in Horizons, I realized that I became extremely comfortable with everyone in my Horizons family. The program is very personalized, and truly is a great way of getting to meet people in different stages of their respective academic careers. I love learning from the medical students, and engaging in seminar-style discussions related to medicine with the high school students.

Jonathan Chen

Major: Biomedical Engineering (Biomedical Computing and Analysis)

Research you are involved in: Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD)

Extracurriculars: Treasurer of CWRU Medwish, Speakeasy A Capella, AMSA, Clinical Shadowing at University Hospitals, Club Tennis

During my free time: I enjoy running and playing all kinds of sports with other people, especially basketball and tennis. I also enjoy learning new piano pieces or simply just reading the latest tech news and checking out new inventions.

Why you enjoy Horizons: 

I love Horizons because it allows me to connect to a diverse community of people who also  share my interests in the medical field. It really creates a unique opportunity to not only share my passion of medicine but also learn from others. 

Through Horizons I get to help motivate high school students through a variety of clinical activities and discussion of current healthcare issues. I really enjoy the relationships we build as mentors to the high schoolers and also being able to seek guidance from our medical student mentors. Horizons really helps benefit each member by allowing us to share different experiences and overall, it is just a great way to build close relationships and support one another.
